Archetype Media Construction
Overview/ Summary of Lesson:
This lesson is designed to get students to think about the concept of archetypes in the media by selecting one of their choice and creating an oral presentation on it with the use of either PowerPoint (on which a short mini-lesson will be given the day before) or some other visual aid. Students are free to use any media they choose with at least three sources one of which must be a work having received critical acclaim and one work which must be a visual piece be it a film, painting, drawing, videogame, etc. The presentation will entail students defining the archetype of their choice and explaining it via the media they’ve chosen.
Learning Content:
- Lesson deals primarily with media literacy but also requires use of oral communication skills
-Lesson also incorporates skills concerning writing and organization which they will need in planning out their presentation
HCPS III (Language Arts) Grade 12:
-Standard 1: Reading: CONVENTIONS AND SKILLS: Use knowledge of the conventions of language and texts to construct meaning for a range of literary and informational texts for a variety of purposes
-Standard 4: Writing: CONVENTIONS AND SKILLS: Use the writing process and conventions of language and research to construct meaning and communicate effectively for a variety of purposes and audiences using a range of forms
-Standard 6: Oral Communication: CONVENTIONS AND SKILLS: Apply knowledge of verbal and nonverbal language to communicate effectively in various situations: interpersonal, group, and public: for a variety of purposes
-Standard 7: Oral Communication: RHETORIC: Adapt messages appropriately to address audience, purpose, and situation
Learning Objective:
Using PowerPoint or some other visual aid, students are to create an oral presentation on an archetype of their choice with the use of at least three media of their choice one being a work of critical acclaim and one work being a visual piece.
Procedure/Lesson Sequence:
-Give mini-lesson on archetypes, what they are – in a general sense - and where they can be found
-Showcase some available resources
-Allow students to choose archetype and create presentation
-Presentations are later given
